Thermal Systems Engineering Fundamentals

The Mecha Atelier Thermal Systems Stage models multi-mode heat transfer and thermodynamics using fundamental governing physical formulations:

1. One-Dimensional Steady-State Conduction (Fourier's Law)

Governed by Fourier's Law: q = -k · A · (dT/dx). For multi-layer series walls, the overall thermal resistance is R_total = Σ(L_i / (k_i · A)) + 1/(h_inner · A) + 1/(h_outer · A).

2. Cylindrical Radial Conduction & Critical Radius of Insulation

For radial conduction across cylindrical pipes, insulation increases outer surface area while adding conductive resistance. The critical radius of insulation is defined as r_crit = k / h.

3. Transient Heat Transfer & Lumped Capacitance Method

Valid when Biot Number Bi = (h · L_c) / k < 0.1. The temperature decay follows θ(t) = exp(-t / τ) where thermal time constant τ = (ρ · V · c_p) / (h · A_s).

4. Extended Surfaces (Fins) & Radiation Exchange

Rectangular straight fin efficiency η_fin = tanh(m · L_c) / (m · L_c), where m = sqrt((h · P) / (k · A_c)). Radiation exchange between two gray diffuse surfaces: q_12 = σ(T_1⁴ - T_2⁴) / R_surface_space.
